Poison Frogs - introduction

The keeping of poison frogs is more fun than at first expected ( who wants to keep a frog and can talk about this among disbeleivers without making a fool out of himself ). Anyway the main reason for me was that i was always interested in frogs, keeping them in the pond at home, breeding with tadpoles and setting them out in the wild etc etc.

To the right there is a fine picture of my favourite frog in the vivarium, not only do I like the Dendrobates Azureus for its stunning unnatural blue colours, this one is a very fine creature with a darker than average look.

One of the highlights of this part of the website can be found in the species chapter were you will find one of the largest collections of information on almost all the species of poison frogs on the web.

From all the frogs in the world poison frogs were the most appealling to me :

They have astonishing colours, they are the true jewels of the rain forest

They can (have to ) be kept in a small piece of rain forest with the possibility to keep the most beautifull flowers in the world : the orchids

There is a technical challenge to meet in order to create the right environment

The vivaria can be designed practically maintenance free ( no algea like with aquaria and water changes )

They have a very far developed and specialised breeding pattern which is unique for frogs

They are endangered and require extra care to maintain the species

Although this could sound appealling to a larger public, a special note should be given on the following:

The poison frogs need care very regularly ( daily ) with new food.

Poison frogs need very small but live food ( living fruit flies and other small insects ), which needs to be breeded or bought at special shops.

Poison frogs require good care and a specialised environment, during holidays you need a fully trained friend to keep them in the right condition.

Small mistakes can have dramatic results, poison frogs are not easy pets ( in fact they are no pets )
