Discovery Myers, 1982, American Museum Novitates. New York, 2721: 14.
Type locality "mouth of the Río Santiago, 580 feet (177 m.) elevation, Department of Amazonas, Peru. De Río Santiago flows into the Río Marañón at about 4° 26' S, 77° 38' W".
Holotype Holotype (AMNH 42963) in the American Museum of Natural History, New York USA.
Etymology
Classification D. captivus is member of the Dendrobates captivus group. Myers (1982, American Museum Novitates, New York, 2721: 22) suggests D. captivus and D. mysteriosus are sister species.
Synonymy English name: Rio Santiago Poison Frog
History
Physical description A small black frog of 14.6-15.4mm with an orange spot in loins and arm pits.
Distribution Only known from the type locality in Peru.
Biotope
Care and breeding They can be kept at a temperature of 25-27°C.
